WEEK TWO - THREE:

FIRST PROJECT OF THE YEAR - Due Tuesday 9/04/12

Draft Pizza Slices (6) Due Monday 8/27/12     #11 What is Statistics?

Personal Heritage Pizza (PHP) Website:  Examine the student work here but recognize that these students were freshman Algebra 1 students with no class examples to help them.  Your expectations should be higher as discussed in class and would be better set by last year's Business Statistic's PHPs

Inventory of Math Symbols: Check out this resource with lots of math symbols - some you know, some you forgot, and some new to you altogether.

Business Statistics Using Excel On-line Glossary:  Here's the vocabulary listed on our textbook's website.  Feel free to get creative with these terms.  Any term is open game for your PHP.

Personal Heritage Pizza 2012 Grading Sheets:  Print out the first page of this sheet and fill in the symbols used in your PHP.  Be sure to total the score.  Your final pizza will be checked against the submiited scoring sheet.  Any discrepanices will result in a significant penalty.  The symbol counts will account for 20-25% of the final score.  Message will count about 30%, creativity will count about 20%, heritage circles will count about 20%, and color will count about 20%.

Cyclical Phases: Peak-trough tables produced by the BLS Current Employment Statistics (CES) program identify key turning points in seasonally adjusted CES time series. Key turning points are those which mark the beginning of sustained periods of growth or contraction in the time series. These points mark changes in trend and are distinct from month-to-month or other short-term fluctuations.

Unemployment Data By Education Level: Data tables for 2011-2012 comparisons.

Education Pays . . .: U.S. Department of Labor shows two bar charts to compare median earnings and unemployment for various levels of education.

Why college?  Time series are two dimensional graphes where one variable is a measurement of time.  This time series shows one more perspective on the value of a college degree.  Does this data prove college degrees cause graduates to have a lower likliehood of unemployment?

Unemployment Demographics: Why is their a relationship between unemployment and ethnicity?  Does it mean minorities are less likely to be hired?  Why do you think women are still paid less then men?

Wealth Inequality Pew Research 2011  Understanding the present state of the country's wealth distribution is critical to charting a course for your financial future.  Does the average U.S. citizen save enough for them to retire at age 65.
