STEP II: Building A Portfolio With Excel
(Guided practice using absolute and relative cell references.)
Begin with Guided Instruction: Pull data for SCHAX & SPXL. Calculate Sharpe ratios, and perform simulation of portfolio returns for various weightings of SCHAX & SPXL. (Note: Gives hint as to optimal weighting for mutual funds. Remember SPXL is a 3x ETF that serves as a generic high Beta stock surrogate.
Independent Student Analysis: Students will pull 2016 weekly stock price data from Yahoo Finance for their three stocks for the last year, not the “bond” because weekly data N/A. Note: Performance dates extend beyond our investment period.
Independent Student Analyses: Perform a simulation for every possible pairing of your three stocks with each other, SCHAX, and SPXL. Each stock will be paired with four securities.
Final Assessment (One Submission Per Team): 12 pages in Excel Workbook - Each Simulation Page Clearly Identifies Optimal Mix With Highest Return - Infer Patterns for Optimal Diversification of Portfolio in Whole)
STEP III: Stock Charts
Begin with Guided Instruction: Prepare stock charts for SPXL. Use period of: 7/1/2016-12/31/2016 - investment period plus 3 months.
(1) Chart #1 Includes Bollinger Bands and Relative Strength Indicator (RSI). Use period of: 7/1/2016-12/31/2016 - investment period plus 3 months. Review stock price performance over the holding period in the context of the Bollinger Bands and RSI.
(2) Chart #2 Includes 50-day and 200-day Moving Averages. Use period of: 1/1/2016-12/31/2016 - investment period plus 9 months. Note all Golden Crosses and Death Crosses and consider whether their directional prediction was correct.
(3) Chart #3 Includes Candlestick chart. Use period of: 10/1/2016-10/31/2016 - Investment period. Discuss patterns in the candlestick charts.
