Course materials are designed to travel with the
student well beyond their class attendance. These supplemental materials
are intertwined in the instruction, so students see how to use their skills
many years in the future when the skill will not be as fresh in their
minds. Skills taught in this manner are less likely to be forgotten
altogether. This portable view of learned skills is common in
professional development workshops for teachers (e.g. we always leave with
thick notebooks of materials to use in the future) but the strategy is rarely employed
to promote life-long learning for high school students. Above, you will see one example of such portable materials. This hand-out matches the output for each of the six functions of a dollar with the appropriate Excel formula and the inputs required for its calculation.
